The documentary Hannah: Buddhism’s Untold Journey tells the story of Hannah Nydahl and the adventure of bringing Tibetan Buddhism to the West. The film portrays Hannah’s wild and idealistic roots in Copenhagen’s hippie era and follows her to the hedonistic city of Kathmandu, where, in 1968, she and her husband Ole became the first two Western students of His Holiness the 16th Karmapa—the first consciously reincarnated lama of Tibet and the man who changed their lives forever.

At its heart, the film offers a glimpse into Hannah and Ole’s unique and inspiring love story and shows their unwavering determination to bring Buddhism to the West. It follows the journey of a remarkable woman against the backdrop of a turbulent, ever-changing world—from Europe and North America, through the fall of communism in Eastern Europe and Russia, to her abduction by guerrillas in South America.

The documentary reveals why the Buddhist ideal of freedom, in all its forms, is more relevant today than ever—and why everything Tibetan should not automatically be regarded as sacred.

The film screening is part of the exhibition “From the Himalayas to the Danube”, held at the University Library in Bratislava from 5 to 25 October 2026 to mark the 30th anniversary of Diamond Way Buddhism in Slovakia.
